I predict he’s going to get to the counter, hand over the envelope and whilst it’s being dealt with quickly walk back and get his keys and his phone.

Being British I have looked at them in a way for him to acknowledge I have clocked their unusual presence and choice of location but have not said anything.

…he keeps looking back, still aware that his belongings are getting further away from him. Still holding envelope with two hands. He could have reached for them at any point but now they are out of reach and he’ll have to walk back through the queue to retrieve them.

I’m in the queue at the post office and a guy has placed his car keys and phone on a shelf to free up his arms to hold a small envelope with both hands - he is aware they’re still on the shelf but is moving closer and closer to the counter as the queue reduces. Keys/phone are 4 metres away now…
