But grids have the advantage of telling a story clearly, elegantly, and visually, about being surrounded, moving between enemy lines, destroying terrain, seeking cover, standing in front of someone, standing on the edge of a cliff, stepping on a trap, ahh... it's all too hard to give up
Hmm, the advantage of a gridless game is that you can have VERY short descriptions for your abilities, and they just work. No range, no diagonals or hexes, no determining edge cases of this and that.
You're writing, too?
Hmm, maybe it's been long enough that I can replay Opus Magnum...
Anyway, the struggle today was writing jumping & falling (with Coyote time), forced movement/displacement, and impact damage on collisions.
Time passed so fast while hobby writing watda
Alternatively, using a narrative currency could work. “I spend this token the move this damage to me” sort of effect which then gives the GM a token to use as they please.
Good if you don’t mind more of a game-y feel, but can be a parasitic system that’s separate from the whole.
In the event that you haven't already considered this: What if it was a base reaction that everyone can do by making a check (eg. basic agility/reflex?), but a player can choose to specialize into using that action by taking a feat that would allow them to remove the check?
This is not so different from MTG/LoR assigning blockers. And it could be done checkless, forgoing the need to evaluate a dice roll saves a lot of time.
But it's still not as *fast* as the uninterrupted Hearthstone style.
On one hand, the desire to take a bullet for another character seems like a natural thing to crop up in TTRPGs. On the other, having attacks be retargeted often can slow down the game.
I've hit a hurdle in hobby writing this TTRPG system.
I am considering whether I should have the ability to intercept attacks targeted at nearby allies as a base ability everyone has. Or if it should take investment, like taking a feat or spending points. Or if it should not exist at all. 🤔
Humu
Gotta say, I don't much like Hero Units in RTS, but I do like Top Bar global powers.
IDK
I'm looking for more if anyone got any
Read through both Rosen Garten Saga and What Happens Inside the Dungeon both are pretty amazing adult comedy manga/manwha. Like... wow!
(Chunja my beloved)
I finished this token tonight on stream and I think it looks OK
I don't know her name yet but she's an angel with a shotgun (and 7 other guns)
Oh man, I found an old blog with game design thoughts from Riot designers. Always enjoyed the amount of transparency they had and still do as designers. Glad some of the old forum posts were preserved.

I think the Naruto ninja world would make a nice power baseline for a tabletop game. Everyone can walk on water, run on walls, and jump real high by default!
Power chatter 💪
For bosses, +HP is p okay to me. If it's a well-designed enemy, I wouldn't mind fighting it for a few more seconds. +HP can be annoying on fodder units, ones where I could learn a rhythm, and then the extra HP just makes them feel a bit off when moving difficulties.
Oh how the turntables
I like some of the difficulty settings in games that increase opportunities along with risks
Slay the Spire: more elites (more relics)
Decktamer: more mutations (to tame)
Into the Breach: you get more enemies & alphas (enemies hit each other) & also ItB also doubles your healing at max diffy
A17 Watcher now. And it took like one try after coming back from Decktamer. It was unfortunately not a heartbreaker run, tho.
First I graze my meat
Then I fall asleep
Okay, beat all bosses on highest difficulty!
I gotta go back and take the other bosses on highest diffy and see all the creatures.
Woah
Well I beat all Decktamer bosses and did the final one on the hardest diffy. It'll be spoilers to say too much. But it's a very cool game with amazingly flavorful and exciting abilities. The ludonarrative consconance is deliciously palpable.
