Replacement tablet came in from Acer, time to set everything back up again.
It has less bullshit on it than most mobile devices I've seen, but it did install a few terrible games via "Acer Suggest powered by Digital Foundry," a service I disabled immediately

Even now that I know what was happening when I tried to background it, I feel like I have a mental block against remembering the commands and keystrokes, because IT DIDN'T WORK THAT TIME. It's going to take me extra effort to remember them now.
The first time I tried using background processing with ffmpeg it suspended the job instead of continuing in the background, because by default it runs in "interactive mode," and it made me question everything I knew about job management from the terminal.
The worst thing for learning something, anything, but especially computers, is when you try something the first time it doesn't work because of some unknown bullshit exception.
Until he is rescued we'll have to make do with Mediocre Joe. Please hurry!
