A small fallen tree covered with rough bark extends from the top center to the lower left of the image. Brown pine needles are apparent (though not in focus) in the right third of the image. The image is centered on a male hairy woodpecker sitting on the fallen tree. It's facing the camera but with its head turned to the left. The dark gray beak has white down at its base. The head is black and white, with a small splash of bright red at the back. The head pattern includes a black crown, a broad black stripe extending past the dark eye, and a narrower, less well-defind black stripe extending back from the beak. The visible part of the back is black. The breast and belly are white. The feet are rough and gray -- in fact, they blend in with the rough gray bark of the fallen tree.

Two things jump out: the long black bill that's narrow, downward-curved, and comes to a sharp point, and a a bright orange eye. The bird's head is mottled gray-brown and the chin is white. The breast is white with brown spots, actually more brown than white. This close up, individual feathers are apparent. The background is a blurry mix of green, dark gray, and light gray.
