I do think habitual chatbot usage is kind of like smoking; there's a range of outcomes, and we very clearly see the worst ones (psychosis, delusions, addiction) but they're all negative. thousands with the cognitive equivalent of being out of breath after one flight of stairs.

Support So we've been using an Al agent since November to answer leadership questions about metrics. It seemed amazing at first fast answers, detailed explanations, everyone loved it. I just found out it's been hallucinating numbers this entire time. Our VP of sales made territory decisions based on data that didn't exist. Our CFO showed the board a deck with fake insights. The Al was just inventing plausible sounding percentages. I only caught it by accident when someone asked me to double check something. I started digging, and holy shit, it's bad.

This makes the ship overall just over a kilometer long, and also gives it a bit over 4 million square meters of deck space spread among 20 decks of the habitat ring. More than enough for a crew of about 5000 even with required storage and recycling for a 4 year mission.
The habitat ring (largely buried inside the hull due to requirements of how the FTL drive works) is 200 meters in radius, which at 2RPM gives about 0.9G at the outside edge. That's the smallest I could get it to still give near-Earth gravity at a reasonable rotation rate.
Still need to come up with a good name for it. I wanted to call it "Endurance", but that name is already being used by several current and future spacecraft and I'd like to find something more original.

I have to admit that Starfleet Academy is surprising me by being actually pretty good. I had really low expectations going in, but this week and last week's episodes in particular have been excellent.

I also sometimes wonder if there's any interest in high concept science fiction procedurals, but ultimately I'm not writing this story for mass appeal, I'm writing it for me.
Of course, one thing I won't be doing is using AI to write any of it.
