i just think it's sad to make a game that incentivizes peaceful interaction and then say "hey i'll give you 400 points if you stomp on this guy." mario is free to jump over any enemy he wants. you have to be *externally coerced* into violence
sure, maybe. i can't claim to know enough about the topic to say because i largely don't play these. i'm conceding the argument for the sake of the greater point because i know at least one person who strongly disagrees with that assertion
of course most people now are not working under that definition of pc and see no value in it. and this is why we must never stop being annoying online
if we take it as read that 'competitive fpses need unrestricted access to their device to function', and that 'a personal computer is a device that the user has full control over, down to the kernel and hardware levels', then a 'competitive fps on pc' is, definitionally, not something that can exist
it's like when you think "wouldn't it be nice if there was cake that had no calories"? sure, it would, but really the cake only tastes good because of the calories it has. this thing cannot exist outside of your fantasies
making these drivers work on linux, in a way where they couldn't be bypassed and therefore useless, would require completely upending all the principles that make linux worth using in the first place. it's a structural incompatibility
to be explicit, this isn't even a matter of whether you, an individual user, would be willing to look the other way and give a videogame access to kernel mode every once in a while. your kernel needs to be signed with keys the dev trusts. so do any other drivers you're running
of course this is very idealistic, no one is actually going to accept pc shooters ceasing to exist. so this will become one of many reasons for windows market share to hold out for probably ever...
proprietary kernel-mode drivers are incompatible with the ideals of linux and open computing as a whole on a hundred different levels. it is not reconcilable. so the only computer these games should reasonably be running is on soldered soc boxes that no one expects to be fully theirs anyways
my honest opinion on anticheat and linux is that if multiplayer shooters really need full access to the device they're running on to survive then maybe multiplayer shooters need to be console exclusives from now on
it is... better for music than it was a few years ago, especially with bitwig studio... enough that i can use it, but i would still be hesitant to recommend it for that purpose to anyone who isn't already into messing with their computer's guts
they tell me bungie isn't affiliated with microsoft anymore and yet... they're the last thing standing between us and the year of the linux desktop...
drop d is so wack!!! and a symmetrical lower tuning would need new strings and a nut adjustment
im gonna need a five string bass if i want to keep learning jrock lines without going insane
no idea if he comes up with any of those basslines himself or if it's all nbuna but the man can fuckin play
