A bright yellow cement mixer, the kind that can be towed behind any pickup truck. Red rented the mixer and borrowed a Dodge Ram from his neighbor for this job. A little sidewalk repair at my mom’s house, Red told his neighbor. When Red is identified years later—though not yet apprehended—a trail of clues lead investigators too, yes, the sidewalk in front of Red’s mom’s house. A city crew jackhammers up a section of the walk, finding a melange of bones underneath, not all of them human.
