Old enough to remember when the FDNY claimed they didn’t use bike lanes for emergency access

On the other hand, my grandfather retired during the Nixon administration and lived on his government pension until the end of Obama so joke’s on them.

His FBI file is great reading.

They said it was a Kh-55 variant that Iran doesn’t even have.

My grandparents didn’t call themselves communists and still almost had their lives destroyed, lmao.

(The crime was β€œpoor and Jewish”)

They killed Mindstorms for this.

Casually caught what I think is the Yankees’ opening day charter on FR24

I went to so many community design sessions in 2023-2024. And then nothing.

Word on the street is that the design is done and shovel-ready. But capital projects have to take 15 years for no discernible reason.

I was going to say β€” alluvial plain vs rocky cliffs. Not only does that push settlements closer to the shore, it makes paralleling the shore easier when building the lines.

Fundamentally it comes down to someone having no connection to New York other than their birth. They have no sense of community or collective responsibility.

And of course improved speed lets you run much more service on the single-track branches.

If you ever see the ridiculous trains they run on the non-electrified New Haven branches, you’ll understand.

Obviously hanging wire would be vastly preferable to a small fleet of boutique trains. But if anything is crying out for more-frequent shuttle service, it’s those branches.

Danbury/Waterbury branches. That’s an easy one.

As an alt, Newbury/Rockport on MBTA or on the low-volume diesel LIRR branches.

This is a drill-level tweet.

It does feel like the system-level settings in individual app preferences is an anti-pattern that should go away. So good change!

Soaring Gas Prices Are Latest Blow for Auto Industry in Constant Whiplash A sharp rise in gas prices is a headache automakersβ€”and consumersβ€”don’t have easy answers to.

Wall Street initially rewarded GM, Ford and others for dialing back their EV plans. Then came Iran-conflict oil prices (gift link):

Yes! It's not even obvious in retrospect, it was always plainly obvious. I'm old enough to remember Ford and GM being caught flat footed in 2008-2009 when consumers suddenly waited cheaper and more efficient cars

There’s a fair few studies that suggest serfs spent 40+% of the year without active occupation.

That being said, it is a lot of work to gather wood, cook, keep home, etc as you point out.

They built a tunnel right there to duck under a rail line! But I don’t think they’d have needed a tunnel β€” just a little spur like Glostrup on the Copenhagen L line.

I think the nuance is always what the fundamental goal of the product is.

If the product is β€œgood, but corrupted by capitalist incentives” that’s very different from β€œthe company kills people, but ethicallyβ„’.”

10.03.2026 16:32 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The point here is not to say serfdom was good! More to point out that lords tended to β€˜keep’ people as harvesters.

10.03.2026 14:23 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

This is the light rail line that also goes right past β€” but not to β€” the airport?

10.03.2026 13:15 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Faster and more effective. If you want/need to freeze the entire airline, you might not be able to stop a single flight from a distant outstation. But the FAA can!

10.03.2026 13:13 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Well, every second of fall leisure.

In the β€œserfdom” eras, there were entire classes that effectively only worked during the harvest, having the rest of the year off!

(Kind of like how a combine sits in a barn for ten months a year)

Huh, sounds a lot like the last Persian Gulf war.

I was actually saying this was going to bite automakers in the ass when Ford announced their β€œno cars” plans eight years ago.

Everyone wants to say it’s financed by the US but it’s a combination of

- conscription (lower cost personnel)
- civil-military integration (effectively, profits from civil industry subsidize the war)
- creation of a fiscal cliff that will destroy their welfare state

Some cars still always run the iPod stack over USB.

There’s a reason Hyundai now lets you switch the usb port to data only.
