I went to so many community design sessions in 2023-2024. And then nothing.
Word on the street is that the design is done and shovel-ready. But capital projects have to take 15 years for no discernible reason.
I was going to say — alluvial plain vs rocky cliffs. Not only does that push settlements closer to the shore, it makes paralleling the shore easier when building the lines.
Fundamentally it comes down to someone having no connection to New York other than their birth. They have no sense of community or collective responsibility.
And of course improved speed lets you run much more service on the single-track branches.
If you ever see the ridiculous trains they run on the non-electrified New Haven branches, you’ll understand.
Obviously hanging wire would be vastly preferable to a small fleet of boutique trains. But if anything is crying out for more-frequent shuttle service, it’s those branches.

Yes! It's not even obvious in retrospect, it was always plainly obvious. I'm old enough to remember Ford and GM being caught flat footed in 2008-2009 when consumers suddenly waited cheaper and more efficient cars
There’s a fair few studies that suggest serfs spent 40+% of the year without active occupation.
That being said, it is a lot of work to gather wood, cook, keep home, etc as you point out.
They built a tunnel right there to duck under a rail line! But I don’t think they’d have needed a tunnel — just a little spur like Glostrup on the Copenhagen L line.
I think the nuance is always what the fundamental goal of the product is.
