We hope the signal will come back. Tianwen-1 used to produce the strongest signal from the Mars domain and was detectable even by amateur radio observers with relatively small antennas of less than 2m.

We hope the signal will come back. Tianwen-1 used to produce the strongest signal from the Mars domain and was detectable even by amateur radio observers with relatively small antennas of less than 2m.
In fact, we regularly observe an extremely weak carrier whose signature could match Tianwen-1 and does not correlate with other Mars orbiters. Further investigation is needed, when time permits.. ๐กใฐ๏ธ๐ฐ๏ธ
There has been no official statement from the Chinese space agency. Other explanations are possible: Tianwen-1 might currently be transmitting only via low-gain antennas or at very low power. We have been receiving and decoding Tianwen-1 telemetry since its launch on 2020 July 23 on a daily basis.
On 2025 December 23 we received what appears to be the last clear signal and telemetry from Chinaโs Tianwen-1 Mars mission using the 20 m radio telescope Bochum. Since then, now almost 3 months ago, there has apparently been radio silence.
The image was taken from a distance of 106 km at a resolution of 16 cm/pixel and shows the largest communication antenna ever deployed in space. Also visible is โthe barrelโ, the satellite bus, with a solar array.
HEO.space photographed the AST BlueBird 6 satellite in orbit. It looks significantly different from the illustrations on AST's website. BB6 was launched on 23 December 2025 and has a phased array antenna measuring approximately 223 square metres.

Unfortunately, for organizational reasons, school contacts with Neumayer Station III (call sign DPรGVN) are not possible until the new crew arrives in around mid-November 2026.

New blog post: ESCAPADE telemetry. In November I posted about decoding the telemetry of this Mars twin orbiter mission. PistonMiner did additional reverse-engineering, and I wanted to revisit this and dig deeper in the telemetry.
