I was brought here with the understanding these would be underappreciated.
The story I've always told myself was that I saw Star Wars nine times (first at a drive-in), Empire three (dad, mom (divorce), friends), and Jedi just one (disappointed). Cable was only weekends at my dad's place, mostly Octopussy? VCR at home, man, there was no rental I didn't repeat.

A panel from Matt Wagner's BATMAN/GRENDEL: 'Devil's Riddle'. Well, I say panel, but in the book it's a half-page. Well, honestly, there it's the full page, with two inset panels covering the bottom third. Each of those inset panels has an inset panel, too. Now that I look at it. Fucking *bible*. The only let-down for me is the lettering. But not the letter-er: Ken Bruzenak (I looked it up) echoes the diary script from Batman Year One for Grendel's Diary captions, and that's fine. The Grendel Voice balloons have ragged edges that follow the captions. The dialogue and narration are placed in the design competently, talking shins aside. My let-down is that the structure of the page (which is wonderful visual storytelling) by its very perfection does not allow the words (of which there are too many) to complement the scene. The flow is great for the page, bad for the drama. Look at those dynamic angles! Look at the layer depths! The folds in the fabrics, the smooth black essence of the Grendel costume. Personal wind flutter as speed and power lines. The rich man's textured existence. The Mignola winged lion. The Kurtzman fear and blood. The panels in the windows, the panels on the floor. Body language. Shadow language. Shouldn't have signed it.

A more flesh-toned example of the "Batman and Robin Romance" genre. They're naked except for the identifying capes and cowl - could be anyone under there, really. The Robin also wears gloves and that cute domino mask. The Batman figure is taller and Burt Reynolds hairy. Motion lines indicate a sudden embrace and butt sonar.
So, okay. This is a porn "parody" panel wherein Batstud bursts through curtains to confront someone who I assume is called Green Dildo. Dildo has captured Robby, who is on all fours. It's all very Neal Adams. "SO!" exclaims Batstud. "YOU LEFT YOUR LITTLE 'CALLING CARD' BEHIND! YOU ALWAYS WERE A CARLESS SLUT, DILDO!" An angry Queen wields a studded green rod as he snarls, "STAY BACK, BATSTUD! OR I LET ROBBY HAVE IT GOOD WITH -- 'THE DESTROYER!'" Batstud has a massive uncut wang. Robby gulps his catchphrase, "HOLY SHIT!"
