In the director category, my "should've been nominated" pick was Steven Soderbergh for the ghost story Presence, in which he played the ghost via his own first-person camera. Some people can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I don't know how he does stuff like this.

Apart from the moral repugnance, this is so revealing of how ignorant conservatives are about poverty. Poor people have to think about money ALL THE TIME. They worry constantly about what everything costs, how to substitute one purchase for another, what bill can be put off until payday, etc.

As of February 7, 2026, ICE is detaining 68,289 people. 73.6% of them (over 50,000 individuals) have no criminal conviction. Many of those who do were convicted only of minor offenses, including traffic violations.

The US Is Counting Traffic Deaths Wrong By emphasizing the number of people killed per mile rather than deaths per capita, traffic safety groups risk normalizing the factors that make American roads so deadly.

Americans drive a lot more than people in other rich countries.

If we didn’t drive so much, we wouldn’t die in so many crashes.

It’s a simple point, but one that NHTSA, traffic engineers, and many road safety org’s have yet to learn.

Just out @propublica.org: How did the Pentagon make the horrible mistake that left more than 150 school children dead? Perhaps because it cancelled an effort to limit such harm in favor of Hegseth’s lust for “lethality.”

According to the disclosure, the former DOGE software engineer, who worked at the Social Security Administration last year before starting a job at a government contractor in October, allegedly told several co-workers that he possessed two tightly restricted databases of U.S. citizens’ information, and had at least one on a thumb drive. The databases, called “Numident” and the “Master Death File,” include records for more than 500 million living and dead Americans, including Social Security numbers, places and dates of birth, citizenship, race and ethnicity, and parents’ names.

According to the complaint, he allegedly told the whistleblower that he needed help transferring data from a thumb drive “to his personal computer so that he could ‘sanitize’ the data before using it at [the company.]” The engineer told colleagues that once he had removed personal details from the data, he wanted to upload it into the company’s systems. He told another colleague, who refused to help him upload the data because of legal concerns, that he expected to receive a presidential pardon if his actions were deemed to be illegal, according to the complaint.

Nothing says “I am aware that what I’m doing is a crime” quite like “it’s OK because I’ll be pardoned by the president if I get caught.”
