Back in 2014-2015 we did a national crowd sourced project where people who experience mental ill-health, distress and trauma submitted a blog about their day and wellbeinv on four named days across the year. Sleep was far and away the thing people mentioned most positively and negatively

I decided to remove my final lecture "How to improve intergroup relations" - I talk about recategorisation, contact theory etc. To be honest, at the peak of this global invasion, I no longer believe any of these theories to make a difference. We need sane leaders to start with for anything to work.

New NHS England Review Excluded 97% Of All Trans Studies To Say Care Doesn't Work The new review has led to a ban for HRT through the NHS England system under the age of 18.

If you've watched how NHS England - stuffed, as Kemi Badenoch explicitly told us, with her handpicked transphobes - does trans* healthcare you can't be surprised by this from @erininthemorning.com.

But still, it's an important service to see her lay it all out.

The breakdown bit at the end of Marquee Moon (it was just playing) - that bit is so beautiful, and it doesn't get enough appreciation.

....And this gives me an excuse to post one of my favourite poems about the importance of books: "Library" by Alvy Carragher. She's a Dublin-based Irish poet, but her poem perfectly describes my troubled, library-loving young mother in New Jersey/Pennsylvania too.

None of this is a surprise. This is Trump and Trump’s regime to a tee. They’re all idiots, not just Trump. There’s no genius in the wings. There’s no eminence gris or secret Machiavelli. This is what happens.

"Whatever states are today, they are not what they once wereβ€”in part because, as Dasgupta chronicles, the state now faces serious competition for center stage in the organization of human society."

People know what they like. Lots of times I read the first couple of pages of something and know it's not for me. I can tell within the first 20 seconds of a piece of music if it's been recorded & mastered in a way that I am not going to be able to enjoy.

That should be self-evident (it's IWD after all). It's not hard to imagine the consequences of acting as the cheatware guy does here, in another context ... In mental health, 'agency' is a useful concept for thinking about what enables - and constrains - our potential for choosing & acting. [3/3].

08.03.2026 14:46 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

But the 'types' of character on display here re: 'agency' are just .. impulsivity, creative opportunism, and over-confidence. Those things plus luck, the article suggests, explain a lot. Agency itself depends a lot on other people, and what they will grant you in a given context. [2/3].

Been thinking about this article all morning. The first half is, as Josie says, very grim. The second half is .. funny, if you can stomach the absurdity. It's interesting how tech has co-opted 'agency' as a term though. It's used as if it refers to an intrinsic personality characteristic. [1/3].

We face two urgent challenges concerning consciousness and AI. Challenge One is that millions of users will soon misattribute human-like consciousness to AI friends, partners, and assistants on the basis of mimicry and role-play, and we don’t know how to prevent this. Challenge Two is that profoundly alien forms of consciousness might genuinely be achieved in AI, but our theoretical understanding of consciousness is too immature to provide confident answers one way or the other. Centrism about AI consciousness is the position that we must take both challenges seriously. The two challenges interact in ways that make this difficult. Steps to address Challenge One might undermine attempts to address Challenge Two by portraying the idea of conscious AI as impossible or inherently unlikely. Conversely, attempts to address Challenge Two might lead to higher levels of misattribution from ordinary users. This β€œmanifesto” attempts to construct mutually consistent strategies for addressing both challenges.

Since people are doing "is AI conscious?" discourse on here again I feel like this philpapers.org/rec/BIRACA-4 by @birchlse.bsky.social remains my favourite piece on the current state of affairs.

(2/2) in preparation, once you know what wants to cover. The structure of that interview is good at prompting reflection in the latter half, so you can decide how much time and detail you want to put into the chapters in the first half.

The basic structure in Michele Crossley's narrative life history interview might work. You could look at it together before you start, figure out what goes in each 'chapter' (it invites the interviewee to think of their life as a book). As others suggested, you could find photos or documents (1/2)
