Data-driven research, at its best, presents you with results that surprise you. 😲

When I began studying Seattle's minimum pay standard for delivery drivers, I personally expected to see high-attachment delivery drivers making more money after the policy went into effect. 1/13

Good thread and article.

One factor it doesn't mention is that survey response rates have fallen a lot. The CPS (households) has gone from near 90% to <70%; the CES (estabs) from 60%+ to 42%; the JOLTS is in the low 30s. That hurts reliability and increases revisions.

I just want to understand how to make these instructions
more clear so that the workflow guidance is always followed.
Did you receive contradictory instructions? Are the
  instructions unclear? Please explain.

● Great question. The instructions in CLAUDE.md are actually quite
clear β€” I just didn't follow them. Here's my honest assessment:

The instructions are not ambiguous. The Development Workflow
  section says:

"After any changes to the package (functions, documentation, or
  data), run the following commands..."

And it even anticipates the exact reasoning I implicitly used to
  skip them:

"Any change to the package requires re-running these commands,
even if it seems like the verification goal has been narrowed."

  There were no contradictory instructions.

While cutting DOL staff and gutting programs, Secretary Chavez-DeRemer wanted a birthday party. Staff objected so she relabeled it a "swearing-in ceremony."

On her birthday. A month after being sworn in. Guests sang Happy Birthday.

Her testimony to Congress: "I did not have a birthday party."

tbf the speed of LLMs and the "looks good" quality of their output makes it very tempting to shut your brain off and assume it's correct, or that you understand it

at the same time interesting to see multi-agent + deterministic + human approaches to overcome verification problems

You can’t starve the public sector to excellence Most people understand a basic truth: you get what you pay for. Skip maintenance on your roof, and you shouldn’t be surprised when leaks appear. The same is true of government. If we want a high-funct...

The central constraint on public-sector performance is not the power of unionsβ€”it is chronic underinvestment.

@hshierholz.bsky.social + @joshbivens-econ.bsky.social: If we want a high-functioning public sector, we need to pay for it.

There is no shortcut.

I agree. I've noticed when using LLMs for data analysis-related coding I am *very susceptible* to assuming everything is correct when it mostly checks out, but there's actually a subtle problem that only future testing/reflection discovers. Trust nothing and verify everything mentality is useful.
