Aversion towards doing something similar with communities.
On a top level, it's three things in my head as a potential supporter
1. Incentive (extra stuff for me)
2. How much work I need to do to GIVE you money
3. Do I feel like I belong
Twitch nails all three. Community software? Not so much.
I guess the key point is the focus is on making a community financially sustainable first before moving to making it profitable.

Adoption is a very hard problem. I agree and this is why I lean more towards something integrated.
V0 of this in my mind is
1. Give supporters a flair/badge
2. Handle all the third-party payment integration
It should be seamless and "trustworthy"
The goal is to cover server and domain cost.
