On September 15th, Trey Reed was found hanging from a tree on his campus, Delta State University. Black students deserve the safety, dignity, and freedom offered to white students, and we will not rest until all of our Black, Indigenous, and comrades of color are able to live free from oppression. The United States was founded in the interest of white landowners by colonization, racial violence, and genocide— all of which maintain their presence in every facet of our society. Our demand for “education for all” is sometimes said so much that it becomes haphazard. More than just economic accessibility, this demand includes a commitment to realize a future where equity is not a utopian fantasy, and our schools are places where we are all able to learn and grow. No one should go to school fearing that they may be kidnapped or killed; this is what it means to fight for sanctuary campuses.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and as socialists, our responsibility is to fight tyranny and violence wherever we are. Expressions of solidarity are not enough; we must practice with our actions. Look out for your classmates who are targets of right-wing violence, provide community for those who are afraid and grieving, continue to organize for our common future, and be a good comrade. Love and solidarity to the Reed family, and to you all.
