So thankful for our ongoing S’Mondays; where students, staff & members of the community are invited every Monday morning to smudge & start the week off in a good way together. Today we also welcomed animal cousins (deer!), which opened up so much learning. The land always offers the lessons.
One of my faves of the year; asking students to create Black Take Action Figures for #BlackHistoryMonth - complete with meaningful accessories, stats & bios, our display is the culminating event of the month to lead into our work in March on valuing diverse stories & voices EVERY day. Best.

Today Indigenous Education meant welcoming the rain to our S’Mondays (a traditional smudge, open to all, to start the week in a good way in community), which only made it more meaningful because we got to talk about the sacred & story carrying spirit of water. The land always offers the lesson.

Today Indigenous Education was the privilege of leading over 100 students in spending the entire day engaged in land based learning, & the reminder for me that there is magic & meaning in making space for the land to be my co-teacher, showing us what we should be learning.

Worried nobody would come, I lost count after 50. So thankful.

Today Indigenous Education was next level. I was invited into a grade 2 class to share medicine & smudge teachings, in question time a little hand went up &, having seen my drum, a student asked if I would sing with them. So the teaching became the Bear Song & we all sang together. Deeply thankful.
My teenage nostalgia self & my current teacher self had the most fun this morning when I challenged students to be gumshoes & engage their geography skills by tracking Carmen Sandiego & her crew around the world. All while the Rockapella theme song I grew up with played on loop. Best.
Today Indigenous Education looked like exploring where sacred medicines grow wild and weaving that into ecosystem studies to show the beauty of interconnections between varied ways of knowing and being that all just help us understand where we fit and connect.
