Unlike conferences, I can do forecasts every few weeks, even with a large class. I can avoid any grading on submissions and just give feedback.
Interesting. My approach to this problem has been to give grade forecasts. A forecast has a short narrative of progress so far, a prediction of what grade is likely if things continue as they are going, and advice on how to improve or continue to do well.

My programming class involves many cycles of revision to solutions to problems self-selected from a large menu of options. Homework with weekly due dates in other classes often takes priority. Setting an expected average weekly rate of submission and sending periodic reminders has helped a lot.
They're great though my go-to is Better World. I see some complaints on Reddit but over more than a decade of ordering, I've never had a single problem.
