ARAH KO Fiddleback It bit me high on the thigh, like a hickey. It was no one's fault. Orbits in collision: a small incision at the source. When the lesion burst, my skin began to liquify; the flesh jellied. My tissue pushed the venom out slowly over a full moon in thick yellow rivulets that my mother wiped clean. The look on her face taught me motherhood meant your pain could live outside your own body. My leg swelled: too full and too empty. Hot with healing. The doctor declared me lucky it didn't fester. I'm not afraid of spiders, the dancing symmetry of legs and eyes, their tiny teeth. I understand the impulse to survive. A female recluse houses twice the necrotic venom as a male for no reason a researcher said, but I can think of many. The wound scarred over, hollow. I press it, just to feel it give.
