This is the ticket. Build the infrastructure and you necessarily build an electorate willing to fight for it.
Like I knew that avoiding cars means saving a lot of costs, but I had no idea how much.
Iβm very grateful we had the options and numbers to choose our living situation based on avoiding car dependency. We should give more New Zealanders the opportunity to unbundle their lives from this cost
One thing this oil crisis is teaching me is how much money most New Zealanders pay for car dependency. I pay $240 *a year* to service my bike. Thatβs one tank of petrol for a hilux. Wtf?

Can⦠can we take some time to reflect on how batshit crazy it is that we run the country on such a volatile energy source? Could we.. do something about that???
I started my newsletter on beehiiv which was a fantastic free option!
The vote is today!

Another banger @henrycooke.bsky.social !! The race to become an electrostate is the race to become powerful in the 21st and 22nd century.
Wild that theyβre at risk at Thursdayβs vote on the budget. If we want to protect them, we can email city councillors and say bike lanes are a non negotiable! wellyclimatenerd.net/wellingtons-...
Fingers crossed the headlines out of Thursdayβs meeting is βAward winning bike programme protected by local leadersβ rather than βaward winning bike programme paused as petrol prices hit $3.5/Lβ !!!!!!
I have gotten into short form video but havenβt cross posted to my blog. Though youβve inspired me!
The Spinoff in New Zealand has short form video they include on their website, though. Different situation but interesting! thespinoff.co.nz
Itβs staggering how much nicer life is when you donβt have to mess with car insurance, unexpected maintenance, WOFs, RUCs, let alone skyrocketing petrol costs.
Labour councillors told us climate change demands urgent action. Now that bike lanes are at risk, we must remind them of that promise.

Me standing at the front of a room with a graphic on screen highlighting what kids have sacrificed for drivers
This is from last week at a talk I gave desperately trying to tell whoever is willing to listen (thanks queens university in this case) what our kids have given up for drivers and our car first culture
ββ¦disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folksβ¦ββ @nondriver.bsky.social
Donβt use accessibility βas a political football.β
If you want to read most councillors on the record statements about things like bike lanes, bus improvements, climate change, I collected them when councillors were asking us for their jobs.
I intend to hold them to their promises.

Just FYI, every Labour council candidate in Wellington told me: βThe climate crisis demands urgent action and should be at the centre of all our council decisions.β
Crazy ideaβ¦ what if we ran our energy system on cheap electricity so petrol prices donβt leave people panicking anymore??? wellyclimatenerd.net/the-race-to-...
and once itβs built there just wonβt be enough money to make public transport better and really we shouldnβt encourage anything else while driving is still better. On and on the cycle goes.
Thanks @henrycooke.bsky.social for talking about this!!
I really think if most people had diversified wealth, it would be a lot easier politically to solve housing challenges, because people havenβt bet their entire future on a home being worth more.
One further thing is that when you put your stock investments (KiwiSaver) into property, no wonder you want house prices to go up forever. Youβve traded 25 years of compound interest for 30 years of compound debt. Unless housing gets more expensive, youβre worse off.
Chances are land values would sink if first home buyers couldnβt prop up the market with KiwiSaver. Their buying power probably wouldnβt be too badly affected if the govt removed the KiwiSaver withdrawal option entirely.
Fantastic piece from @henrycooke.bsky.social. Not only does using KiwiSaver for a first home artificially inflate the housing market, it denies young people the benefit of compound interest at the time itβs most beneficial to them.

Just one more study bro
Everything but the actual issues.
Hereβs the data!!
Just imagine if all bus replacements were during peak hours. Hutt and KΔpiti commuters would be pissed, and maybe, just maybe, you could put pressure on for some more funding for repairs.
Iβll post the full data for anyone to play with on @wellyclimatenerd.net tonight when Iβm not eating lunch lol
