Tonight, I was looking at water.noaa.gov to see where the US is flooding. My 11-year old pointed to the ongoing major flooding in North Dakota, and I said "Oh, that's Devils Lake. It's always flooding there." They asked "Why?" and a rabbit hole yawned before me.
150,000 acre feet per year is 50% of Nevadaโs annual allotment from the Colorado River.
We donโt take the full 300,000 AFY every year to support Las Vegas and environs. The extra is banked in other states for future use in Southern Nevada.

A photo of an envelope from the Library of Congress, US Copyright Office, with a black business card lying on top showing a Jolly Roger-styled illustration of a โskull and crossbonesโ. The skull wears a fedora hat, stylishly tilted, and the โbonesโ are a crossed rock hammer and shovel.
This is a tiny victory amid all the horrors [waves hands around] โฆbut sharing because this is my first official copyright EVER, and I fuckin LOVE that @rckhnd.comโs nerdy Jolly Rockhound is now in the Library of Congress. ๐
The bravest thing that Brian Kilmeade has ever done in his life was having to apologize for saying something incredible racist and vile.
Heโs done it several times, so he has experience, but stillโฆ
Early Neanderthals walked into this cave, went three football fields into the earth, created 15-foot-wide bubbles of rock, lit and tended small fires upon them. Then they left.
This unique find has implications for how we underestimate many past peoples.

The world feels very sharp right now. We're all bouncing around off sharp people, sharp news, & sharp emotions.
Your kindness can light up a sharp world. By simply being kind, you can stop people from impaling on the sharp in their world.
Be kind. Soften the world.

I am seriously, seriously wondering how many GOP politicians are doing a very careful calculus on their political future right now. They're facing a no-win scenario, and have to choose the path of least damage. If they don't, things will be far worse for them, and for all of us.
Holy moly. Totally unhinged.
Canโt even imagine living in that much fear you need a goddam arsenal in Long Island.
Or anywhere, for that matter.
Much different than Dire Straits but beautiful. Needed this for our Sunday morning...

The difference between the spike in global oil prices now versus 2022 is that this time the US president single-handedly caused it to happen overnight with a policy while accepting no responsibility, while the US president in 2022 was blamed for it even though he didnโt cause it.
This is just horrifying. It'll negatively impact everyone for generations.
HOT DANG!
A hand-drawn map of the April 1974 "super outbreak" by Dr. Ted Fujita.
Looking through old files and had to stop and admire Fujita's map of the 1974 tornado outbreak.
I would give anything to have a full-size physical copy of it one day.
Itโs too easy to go to war
the thing is that it won't matter because Americans react minor inconveniences the way people in other countries react to a sinkhole opening up and swallowing the national capital during a presidential address
And he certainly isnโt going to know how to fix it.
Bonkers. Never knew about this.
This raises the obvious question of what kind of thing the Trump admin might need the National Transportation Safety Board to do that a conscientious Board member would reject.
It's not a Pixar movie UNLESS you come out of it in desperate need of a week-long session with both your psychologist AND core friend group.
