While Shelly devices connect to the internet, you're right that this flaw uses the Wi-Fi access point. However, other vulnerabilities can potentially work through internet access if the device is connected, for example:

That's not true. Any internet connected technology can be hacked. In this story, the Gen4 Shelly devices leave their Wi-Fi access points permanently active, allowing full admin control.

I had to move into a "smart apartment" once for work. Every apt was REQUIRED to use Ring doorbells. I got notifications all day showing me everyone that came or went. Neighbors would post Ring videos on NextDoor making fun of people. I moved ASAP!
Seriously, of all things to connect to the internet, this is definitely one of the stupidest.
Seriously. Many of them have major vulnerabilities from day 1, but the situation gets even worse when the manufacturers stop releasing security updates for them a couple of years later. Next thing you know, your smart washing machine is part of a botnet.
