How carefully do you vet *all* the people you know?

I have high standards for partners and close friends, but it's not like I get to pick categories like coworkers, classmates, or partners of extended family or acquaintances. I just know them! Some are great and some suck!

I think the national nostalgia and idealization around college campuses really undercuts this assumption, too imo.

This was a constant thing with Republicans under Obama. They hated their own party, people who didn't know better crowed about the polls showing that, and then Republicans won landslides in 2010 and 2014 because their voters hated Obama even more.

An average cat would have discerning taste even if those tastes are wildly out of sync with yours. An average dog would react with equal enthusiasm to The Replacements and Nickleback.

I'd like to claim my dog as an exception, but I've seen her fish a used tampon out of the trash and eat it, so.

You’re correct about one of those albums.

Incidentally the β€œGaiman is autistic” defense these people use is not only very insulting to autistic people, who understand consent, but is … a little implausible given that he’s an incredibly emotionally skilled person! That - and talent - made his career: LBJ level social skills.

I think in Mississippi, the only way you get this is demoralized Republicans not turning out. Persuasion at that scale among white Mississippians probably isn’t possible.

But judging by special elections and the GOP right now, I actually do think a turnout collapse at that scale is possible.

This shoe thing is maybe the best example of Trump being an avatar of pure malice. These are his allies. The guys carrying out his agenda, willingly and gladly. And still he’s got to humiliate them. Why? Because it’s just what he wants to do to *everybody*.

That this war with Iran is unpopular in a way never before recorded in American history has seen remarkably little attention from the press

I think the main problem you run into is the lack of structure. That can be really bad for people's mental health. The structure set up to replace how we think of work now really doesn't have to look anything like it, but people need to have connections and goals to work toward.

Bluesky, I would pay you five bucks a month for basically nothing except not making me pretend I care about federation

It is extremely stupid. However, it reflects a deeper problem imo - the sheer certainty among the public that greater state capacity or greater infrastructural development will never actually benefit them, while tax cuts or direct handouts provide immediate financial benefit.

It's a bad situation!

we’ve had two truly enormous crises under Trump and the first one was covid which everyone apparently gave him a pass for despite the fact that he made it worse

but this one is completely, obviously, unquestionably his fault and would not have happened without him

I have no idea if the new F1 cars are actually *good*, but the teams clearly haven’t optimized battery strategy yet and that means for now we have a new element of chaos to make racing more interesting!

Great brands and discount prices, Town Fair Tire!

This is on repeat in my head when I wake up disturbingly often.

Tapping the "poor areas don't vote for conservatives because they're poor, they're poor because they vote for conservatives" sign

Like, I started watching F1 from my couch in 2022 and have a limited at best understanding of the technical side of things. Even *I* knew that a ton of the staff who worked on the Honda-badged Red Bull engines went over to Red Bull Powertrains before Newey and Aston Martin apparently did.

06.03.2026 16:43 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Look, I realize most of this is probably Honda doing Honda things, but I have an apparently bold suggestion: it may have been a bad idea for Aston Martin to take the guy who is known as an engineering genius and give him a job where he has to do a ton of non-engineering stuff.

06.03.2026 16:40 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Right, and the thing is, going from zero to β€œeverything will break if you don’t do the job perfectly right now” is terrible cognitively, so there’s good reason to fill the time with less important work.

sheehy is one of the wealthiest men in congress, this poor veteran needs to get a good lawyer who specializes in civil suits and take some of this motherfucker’s houses

Insurance agent on my mom's side, engineer at Pratt and Whitney eventually turned addiction counselor on my dad's side. Both my grandmas worked outside the home, too. Mom's mom was a school secretary and Dad's mom taught elementary school.

This does not make me sound rugged.

if you think the greatest threat to effeminate gay boys is the trans movement and not the cis straight men who overwhelmingly exclude and brutalize them then you should walk into the ocean immediately

they really might have ridden the anti-woke train all the way to bankruptcy court, an all time brand fuckup that should be taught as a cautionary tale in business school for decades

Kids playing hockey during intermission is one of my favorite parts of seeing hockey games in person! Good luck to your friend’s daughter, I hope she has a blast.

I asked my sister about this since she’s a registered nurse, but unfortunately she’s a responsible professional and said that an isolated photo isn’t enough to tell why a rash is happening. (Relevant factors would include itching, drainage, etc.)

But I still enjoy seeing him look awful.

(1) What if we didn't pit those against each other and instead we fought for both?

(2) Calling daycare a "big-ticket want" is all I need to know.

Oh, that’s awful! I might have a hard time fully embracing an NY team since I was raised as a Boston fan in other sports and the rivalry is very real, but I can definitely make a point of going to Sirens games.
