βIt is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement β that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life.β β Sigmund Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents
Model Evaluation and Its Discontents Invited Symposium Saturday May 24, 2025 10:30 AM - 11:50 AM ET Subject: Methodology Wes Bonifay (Chair) Talks: How to Lie With Fit Statistics Wes Bonifay (Presenting Author) The Shape of Good Model Fit Sonja Winter (Presenting Author) Consideration of Indicator Interchangeability Can Strengthen Construct Validation Efforts Ashley Watts (Presenting Author) Statistical models enable scientists to describe data, explain phenomena, form testable predictions, and (ideally) understand the world. To achieve such aims, a model and its components must undergo thorough evaluation. In this symposium, we confront the widely accepted methods of model evaluation, expose their limitations, and explore more insightful alternatives.
If you are planning to attend #APS2025 next week, please come by our (@winterstat.bsky.social & @ashleylwatts.bsky.social) invited symposium on the myriad problems of widespread statistical model evaluation practices (e.g., goodness-of-fit testing), along with some insightful solutions

While the State Department CAN revoke *visas* with very little legal process involved, stripping someone of a green card is done by DHS (not the State Department) and requires filing formal charges alleging a violation of immigration law and a removal hearing in front of an immigration judge.
In this op-ed, we - the presidents of SREE and AEFP - joined forces to argue for the importance of evidence on "what works" and how cutting such funding is not "efficient" - it is wasteful. www.brookings.edu/articles/cut...

504 plans are how kids can carry EpiPens or make sure their classroom is peanut free. Itβs how kids with diabetes can use insulin. Itβs how kids with mobility issues can have more passing time or use an elevator. An attack on 504 is an attack on everyone. Listen to @lollardfish.bsky.social.
βClarivate will also phase out one-time perpetual purchases of digital collections, print and digital books for libraries.β
Clarivate is making all its academic assets rentals.
This will be incredibly unpopular.

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block.
The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US.
A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans.
Again, this isn't about efficiency.

Screenshot of the article that reads: The Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education, appears to be the latest agency in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Muskβs Department of Government Efficiency office. Dozens of researchers and contractors received notices Feb. 10, directing them to immediately stop work on research projects and program evaluations financed by IES, a federal agency with a roughly $800 million budget, sources say. It was not immediately clear whichβor how manyβof IESβ hundreds of contracts are affected, though one source estimated roughly 170.

New preprint with @winterstat.bsky.social and Ellen Fitzsimmons on ordinal factor analysis, where the latent variables are scaled so that they generally take values from 1 to # of ordered categories. The scaling is intuitive because it is what you use when you treat ordinal variables as continuous.
