Interspeech 2025 poster on Quantifying and reducing speaker heterogeneity within the Common Voice Corpus

Important notice: the client ID does not always correspond to a single speaker ID! Every so often, a single client ID contains more than one speakerβs voice. Our #Interspeech2025 paper examines the extent of this problem and proposes a solution

Oh yeah, that's probably an error, I'll correct it. The way it works for <cutoff> is that it'll assume it's a cutoff of the next immediately following word, so yeah should be "<cutoff-longword> longword word"
Definitely a bug, there is logic to decrease the probability of spn for cutoffs (but keep it as possibility vs subwords), but either it's not working correctly or if it is treating it as an <unk> token explicitly, then the cutoff model isn't being applied. I'll try to take a look at it this weekend!
As a prep for my last lectures on phonetic fieldwork at the LSA summer institute, I created a youtube video guiding users through how I (quickly) mark phonetic variants in recordings. Iβm happy to send along the Praat script (or similar versions on my website).

In @vauhinivara.bsky.social 's book "Searches" there is a lovely chapter reflecting on how hard it can be to avoid Amazon, but there is really zero reason to buy books there anymore, ever. Go to your local indie or check out bookshop.org
We're delighted to announce that #LabPhon20 will be held in MontrΓ©al, QuΓ©bec, Canada, in the (North American) summer of 2026, with the theme βLooking back and looking forward.β Dates, thematic sessions, invited speakers and further information will be announced by the organizing committee. #LabPhon

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?
Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.
Linguists! We're hiring an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in phonology (secondary specializations welcome) at McGill linguistics, deadline January 13. Come work with us!

Newsletter: We're at peak AI - generative AI models have hit the wall where they wonβt improve much further thanks to a lack of training data, killer apps or any kind of sustainable business model.
The results of a collapse could be catastrophic.

Anyone else working in "AI" have a serious disconnect when reading scifi/fantasy these days where they talk about actually useful/intelligent AIs? I have to do a double take anytime a character just assumes that an AI will do a novel task well.
π£ Please help us understand how linguists develop as educators!

Does anyone know if ASR models with transformer/conformer architectures (i.e. Whisper) struggle more with producing faithful transcripts for languages with scrambling since they aren't as time linear dependent? Like does Russian scrambling get undone by Whisper in favor of more common word orders?
I did watch a review of the first couple of manga arcs and it seems quite different than the anime in terms of actually contextualizing Luffy and giving rationale to his goals, so it might be mostly a result of the anime
Maybe! I was probably looking for something different than it was.
Anyway, there's much better anime out there than One Piece, I feel, with actual characters that have actual motivations and the story actually makes sense. Would recommend Apothecary Diaries! Even more recent shonen anime like My Hero Academia has more relatable characters I feel.
