Ha ha! I never heard that one. I was reading Starlog and knew the backstory on BIG TROUBLE, how the script had floated around for years and was originally a Victorian period piece before Richter and Carpenter punched it up and set it in the present.
I know our expectations for this administration are in the basement but it is INSANE they started a war without a plan for the Strait of Hormuz.

I suspect BUCKAROO BANZAI was very different movie if you didn’t watch REPO MAN, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, SIXTEEN CANDLES, TEMPLE OF DOOM, STREETS OF FIRE, GHOSTBUSTERS, TOP SECRET!, and THE LAST STARFIGHTER in the months leading up to it. 😆
I saw Siskel described as boring but I was more often on his side — Siskel always had praise for a good popcorn movie while Ebert was way more of a judgey arthouse guy.
I remember neither liked BUCKAROO BANZAI, but Siskel called it “a near miss” while Ebert just hated it. Both wrong in that case. 😁
There is a HUGE problem in fandoms now of “the media I like MUST be Objectively Good, and the media I do not like MUST be Objectively Bad.”
That is preteen insecurity talking. Adults expect others to like things they don’t, bc they accept differences in taste between people. That is right & proper.
It was a real lesson that these discerning professional critics could just enjoy some dumb stuff. You can like things that are not technically polished or even good, and even admit it!

One of the most freeing things I ever watched was Siskel & Ebert’s “Guilty Pleasures” episode, where they both recommended movies that were not technically good but that they really enjoyed.
They both loved BLIND FURY, the cheap Australian-made Zatoichi knockoff starring Rutger Hauer (I did too 😄).
Fascism has a shallow playbook, and so Kirby speaks to past and present with this stuff.
