Iβm sure Groat told some elaborate story about govt oppression but iirc he was caught by customs trying to take a load of print goods across the border to sell at a con, and tried to claim it was all just personal use stuff even though it was plainly boxes of vendor merch he needed to pay duty on

Castillo v. Texas - Wikipedia
The Texas case was Castillo v. Texas (2002), from an incident at Keithβs Comics in Dallas in 1999. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castill...
Tellingly in the 1986 Friendly Frankβs case that led to the CBLDF, one of the βobscene comicsβ was Omaha the Cat Dancer. Furry porn is ALWAYS the starting target.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.
I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

The peeling back of what is "allowed" porn that's been going on for years will continue until nothing is left
At least they went after the icky ones first so all the self-unaware prudes here could gloat about it before they were on the chopping block too

I talked to dozens of experts in government, academia, cybersecurity, and industry about exactly this scenario last year and not only did not one of them think I was being alarmist, many brought it up unprompted and many said there was zero chance it hadnβt already happened

Ha ha! I never heard that one. I was reading Starlog and knew the backstory on BIG TROUBLE, how the script had floated around for years and was originally a Victorian period piece before Richter and Carpenter punched it up and set it in the present.

I think a lot of 80s movies make WAY more sense in situ!
I suspect BUCKAROO BANZAI was very different movie if you didnβt watch REPO MAN, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, SIXTEEN CANDLES, TEMPLE OF DOOM, STREETS OF FIRE, GHOSTBUSTERS, TOP SECRET!, and THE LAST STARFIGHTER in the months leading up to it. π

I saw Siskel described as boring but I was more often on his side β Siskel always had praise for a good popcorn movie while Ebert was way more of a judgey arthouse guy.
I remember neither liked BUCKAROO BANZAI, but Siskel called it βa near missβ while Ebert just hated it. Both wrong in that case. π

There is a HUGE problem in fandoms now of βthe media I like MUST be Objectively Good, and the media I do not like MUST be Objectively Bad.β
That is preteen insecurity talking. Adults expect others to like things they donβt, bc they accept differences in taste between people. That is right & proper.

It was a real lesson that these discerning professional critics could just enjoy some dumb stuff. You can like things that are not technically polished or even good, and even admit it!
S&E recited a litany of weaknesses in JURASSIC PARK and then both blessed it bc βthe dinosaurs are great.β

One of the most freeing things I ever watched was Siskel & Ebertβs βGuilty Pleasuresβ episode, where they both recommended movies that were not technically good but that they really enjoyed.
They both loved BLIND FURY, the cheap Australian-made Zatoichi knockoff starring Rutger Hauer (I did too π).

This is one of 2025's best movies. But you won't get to see it compete at the Oscars.
It's called Nobody, and it earned almost $250 million on a $10< million budget. A future is coming for small, risky films β with or without the Oscars. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-film-t...
