Memories of first watching The Millionaireβs Express?
The Podcast on Fire episode on The Millionaireβs Express is out now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.
Itβs truly impressive how sharp Cinema Cityβs Cantonese, audience-friendly instincts were early on. With four films in the 1981 Top 10, Beware of Pickpockets landed at number 10 and is a surprisingly sharp assault of slapstick featuring one of Dean Shekβs funniest performances.
THE DELINQUENT (1973) carries little of the usual Chang Cheh DNA. Instead, it feels like him backing co-director Kuei Chih-hung as he steps forward with an on-location angry youth drama that turns brutal, feral, and shockingly violent.
1980. The future Cinema City team tests the waters with audience-friendly Cantonese comedy in CRAZY CROOKS. Ultra low-budget, broad, occasionally visually clever, but exhausting over a full feature. Still, you can feel the first steps toward changing the game.

We discuss, with our jaws on the floor, Yuen Biaoβs insane stuntwork like this rooftop flip.
Never thought weβd do this, but weβre going back, re-recording an audio commentary from 2021. Older, in more pain, but wiser and better.

Podcast On Fire returns tomorrow! We kick off 2026 with a discussion of a Sammo Hung film. Do we have your attention now?
King of Beggars has arrived! Original stereo surround mix restored for the first time since LaserDisc. Nice work, Eureka.
Rest in peace, Bruce Leung. A fine martial artist and actor. From Call Me Dragon to the copyright fever dream The Dragon Lives Again. Legacy and impact was later honored in Kung Fu Hustle and Gallants. Always seemed game. Heβll be missed.
And the podcast is back soon. Sammo Hung and Lau Kar-Leung-fans will be very happy.
A case of βgo with the public domainβ version, as thatβs where THE HEAD HUNTER retains its full Chow Yun-fat assassin and American/Soviet Cold War story. The social awareness is noble but not followed through efficiently. The Long Goodbye edit removes the geopolitical subplot.
Melvin Wongβs credit on The Head Hunter. Crikey.
Sad to hear Yuen Cheung-Yan has passed.
Brother of Yuen Woo-Ping and part of the iconic Yuen family, he was everywhere in HK action cinema.
He grew into a comic actor, director, and stunt coordinator whose work even carried him to Hollywood (Daredevil, Charlieβs Angels).
New commentary out soon!
Vinegar Syndrome @vinsyn.bsky.social just announced Made in Hong Kong Vol. 2, featuring Stanley Siuβs New York Chinatown, which I recorded a solo commentary for.
Proud of this deep dive into a long-obscure HK crime film.
Keep the passion up for films, Clinton and a Happy New Year to you. Thank you for the kind words about the podcast this year.
Hong Kong cinema is better than the things you like.
Wicked slicing and dicing from Chor Yuen's THE KILLER (1972, aka Sacred Knives Of Vengeance).
Action choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping and Yuen Cheung-Yan.
THE KILLER (1972, dir. Chor Yuen) - Featuring several huge battles of hard punches, kicks, wilder stunts than usual for the time and extensive Shaw Brothers blood, the flow is incredible and very well honed for its time. Aka Sacred Knives Of Vengeance. First time watch in original language.
Just a bit of fun for the year end show.
Return of the One-Armed Swordsman strips away the emotional core in favor of bloodletting, tons of it, but still finds time to develop Fang Gang (Wang Yu), once a reluctant swordsman, now a revered leader in a world he tried to leave behind.
