I had heard rumblings about it in the colorist community, though now it's been confirmed in the Studio Display XDR's spec sheet whitepaper.

I wonder if it's to optimize for LED spectrum backlights, prioritize 10° vs 2° based on how people tend to use screens, or some other optimization they want? Most past refinement attempts easily mapped back to CIE 1931.

It will be interesting to read these future whitepapers.

Apple is working with CIE to refine a new color matching function as an alternative to CIE 1931, currently called "Apple CMF 2026". This has been attempted multiple times (like by UCL London in 2000), but only minor scaling changes to mitigate metamerism issues. Wonder what Apple's motivation is. 🤔

Other things art should convey:
