Ever wondered what powers a solar flare? 💥
Solar Orbiter is finally giving us answers to this long-standing mystery.
The mission caught a 'magnetic avalanche' on the surface of the Sun just before a flare was released.

Published 2015 in #SolarPhysics, with highly-cited contributions to a conference in honor of Zdeněk Švestka.
Nice to see a paper led by one of my PhD students getting the Editor's Choice in Solar Physics! We looked at Doppler shifts in Si III during solar flares using SORCE/SOLSTICE data. There also appears to be a longitudinal dependence on velocity, which may or may not be instrumental...
MSc & PhD positions in #heliophysics and #exoplanets at Mackenzie University, Brazil. Applications deadline May 13. Scholarships available - please get in touch (DM me!) for more info about this and projects!

Links to Aisling's paper (agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...) and press release (www.qub.ac.uk/News/Allnews...) now available.
Cheers dude! We’re working on that along with a press release. Will post the links once they’re done. I can send you a preprint though.
My PhD student Aisling O'Hare has published her first paper studying the impact of QPPs in solar flare emission on Earth's atmosphere. The ionosphere is much more sensitive to small changes in EUV irradiance than previously believed as measured by changes in total electron content. 👏
This Saturday, between 10am and noon, a partial solar eclipse will be visible from much of the UK and Ireland (weather permitting). QUB/ARC are hosting an event at the Ulster Museum where we will have eclipse glasses and solar telescopes. Come along! www.ulstermuseum.org/whats-on/cha...
Having a great week at @issibern.ch with these amazing scientists discussing The Impact of Solar Flare Irradiance on the Earth's Ionosphere
Aww thank you Alec! ☺️
I am very honoured to have been awarded the James Dungey Lectureship by the Royal Astronomical Society.
Great video Chris! And thanks to @pjasimoes.bsky.social for sharing! My research group at QUB are studying the impacts of solar flares on the #ionosphere and we have two papers in review that show that the ionosphere may be much more sensitive to rapid changes in solar EUV emission than we thought.
Our paper on the instrumental discrepancies on solar flare observations in Lyman-alpha emission, led by Harry Greatorex, has now been published in Solar Physics: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
