Half and half. Some rooms were already taken by supersponsors when general availability opened (according to the "hotel availability" page in ConCat) and many of the rest sold out in ≈15-20 minutes.

and i think the "room block" is a set of rooms set aside for AC to distribute how they see fit; the general public cannot register those rooms

* the only way to book inside the "room block" is thru the orchid events link
* AFAIK, the only way to get such a link is to register
* You can separately buy hotels w/o registering but they won't be subj to the anthrocon room rate

Lmao are people really spreading that rumor? you can only book a hotel with a valid con registration, right? so a Bot Army to steal all the rooms would cost $100/bot, of course such a thing didn't happen
