I get tired of saying it, but Iβll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.
But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
Iβm hiring!! π Looking for a full-time Lab Manager to help launch the Minds, Experiences, and Language Lab at Stanford. Weβll use all-day language recording, eye tracking, & neuroimaging to study how kids & families navigate unequal structural constraints. Please share:

Clothespins decorated with paint markers and pens, with affirming messages. Like "bee you" with a drawing of a bee. And "you're sweeter than pie" with a checked motif. And "you can do it" and "unleash your creativity."
If you need a little hope this morning - the current tween trend involves decorating clothespins with affirming messages, then clipping them on friends' backpacks when they're not looking.
Here are a few that my 11-year-old decorated this weekend β€οΈ
Happy to share "The Dynamics of Caregiver Unpredictability Shape Moment-to-Moment Infant Looking During Dyadic Interaction," out now in Child Development thanks to a large team of people I worked on this with! srcd.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirec...

Learning usually occurs when we encounter new data. But we also have the capacity to reflect on our past experiences. What can we learn from simulating past experience?

This summer my lab's journal club somewhat unintentionally ended up reading papers on a theme of "more naturalistic computational neuroscience". I figured I'd share the list of papers here π§΅:
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.
University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.
"Our parent company, Paramount, is trying to complete a merger. The Trump administration must approve it. Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways"
Great coverage of the importance of Head Start programs (and threats to them) from @anya1anya.bsky.social - featuring family educators from All Our Kin!
"Dill has been running a family child care business from her home for 15yrs, and every one of her 13 grandchildren has spent time here..."
π§΅Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the β¬οΈ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies
We are devastated to see 20% of our beloved colleagues laid off by the same leadership who have yet to recognize our union.
We demand that leadership at Sesame Workshop bargain with us over the terms of these massive layoffs. Consider letting them know that you expect the same.

"White parents who see themselves as egalitarian must recognize that the stakes are now higher than ever. If you want to raise children who reject racism rather than passively absorbing it, right now, today, talk with your child about race and racism."

Thinking about this body of research in light of what's happening in Washington.
Job loss has substantial effects not only on the individuals, but also on the families and communities surrounding them.
These political games will ruin so many people's lives.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives
And the funding announcement for diversity supplements now has been updated to expire today. Supplements are so important to the careers of junior scientists. This is crushing for post docs and early career faculty

Sad to see webpages of NIH diversity supplements taken down. I know this was suspected to happen, but itβs heartbreaking to see.
