HAPPY PUB DAY TO NONESUCH
it is SO GOOD
I have been trying to put together what makes it so great, and I think it's (a) it's a world that envelops you like a warm bath with (b) a ripping plot and (c) what I can only describe as "emotional competence porn," in which the love story is two thornyβ
Happy release day @oliviawaite.com! Excited to read this!
Book cover for the forthcoming book The Scarlet Ball, by Nghi Vo. An Asian woman in a red Gilded Age ballgown faces the viewer defiantly holding a mask made to resemble a white woman's face. There are dark smoky hands reaching for her out of the darkness, grabbing her arms and caressing her face.
NEW COVER NEW COVER NEW COVER!
I've been dying to show off this incredible piece of art by Martina FaΔkova, and here it is!
On October 6, 2026, you're all going to meet Judith Ban, and I cannot wait.
A color photo of a black woman with dreads with highlighted tips reading an open book in the Getty library. She wears a black shirt with a burgundy jacket with yellow embroidered trim and bold, multi-colored statement necklace. Both of her hands hold the book on each side atop a wooden desk tabletop. There is a pile of three books in front of her. Behind her is a wooden wall displaying various art magazines and publications.
A color photo of two women in the Special Collections Reading Room reviewing archival materials. The woman on the left has gray hair pulled back and appears to be mid-speaking wearing black round eyeglasses, a striped navy blue, yellow, white, and black scarf, and a black-and-white top with blue jacket. The woman on the left holds up a black and gray transparency sheet which the woman to her right is looking directly at. The woman on the right also wears round black framed eyeglasses and wears a white shirt with a black blazer jacket. You can see a variety of archival materials laid out on the table for viewing though some are out of focus and blurry.
A color photo of two women doing conservation work in a museum. There is a sepia toned drawing with a matted frame on the table. The central figure wears a navy blue with white polka dots dress. She looks into a large microscope that is positioned over the artwork. She has short brown hair and both her hands rest on the table with the artwork in front of her, one hand on each side of the artwork. The woman to the left has short brown hair, wears eyeglasses, and is wearing a long-sleeve navy blue shirt. You can see her profile as she leans forward slightly with her hand positioned on the matte of the artwork pointing to something in the drawing with a small tool in her hand.
A color photo of a Getty Graduate Intern giving a museum gallery tour. She stands to the left with her hands outstretched, her left hand downward palm forward and her right hand lifted up with showing the palm of her hand. There is a wooden doorframe behind her. To the left are a row of stone bust statues, there are about 5 or 6 visible. The one closest to her hand appears to be a man with draped textiles on his shoulders, a beard, and with short hair. Behind the bust statues are a row of wooden windows with open shutters.

A sign of life! Tiny cluster of snowdrops (drooping white flowers) surrounded by dead leaves and some hardy green leaves.

OMG I do enjoy the variety of clothing that people break out when it first gets warm.

Every spring is like a crappy little archeology site.
Argh! Our temps are also going to dip a bit so sympathies! I fall for the Spring of Lies and Deception every time.
in other high-stakes breaking news, some of these plants are pretty darn resilient.
this glorious sunshine has completely melted all the snow in our yard.
Still looking, yo!

Pardon the scary murder-basement walls (will paint them one day), but I bought a secondhand bar table to use as a standing desk today, and I set up a small arts and crafts corner, too.
Awful, especially in the parking lot where one should expect pedestrians. People are not paying enough attention these days.
YES! I should have thought to link to this lol
Thank you! Yeah, maybe that's the best thing to do.
If you were a reader looking for a PDF book club packet on my website (eg some discussion questions, maybe a playlist etc) would you prefer it be on the page with all the info and links about the book, or on the page with all the bonus/downloadables? Or somewhere else?

"At a 40-per-cent margin per sale, it makes more sense to carry a $25 book instead of a $12 one, [McNally] says. Even with Indigoβs push into non-fiction mass-markets, 'I donβt think thereβs going to be enough product to make an impact,' McNally says."
It's only for non-fiction, but Indigo is trying to bring back the mass market paperback: www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/book...
