For a platform that promotes itself as artist-friendly, this level of opacity is alarming. If even basic questions about licensing and royalties cannot be answered, it’s hard to say that Apple Music truly supports the artists whose music powers the platform.
The core issue remains unanswered: my copyrighted work is distributed inside a DJ mix on #AppleMusic without my authorization, and no one can clearly explain how the rights holder is supposed to be compensated.
When I returned to #Apple asking for clarification, the response was even more vague: they cannot assist with royalty or financial questions and I should resolve the matter with my distributor. No explanation of licensing. No explanation of rights management.
So the situation became absurd: #Apple says royalties should go through the distributor, while the distributor says they cannot collect royalties from DJ mixes at all. In other words, the music generates streams on the platform, but the artist has no clear way to be paid.
I was then told that tracks in DJ mixes are identified and counted as regular plays, meaning royalties should be paid through the distributor that uploaded the original release. But my distributor explained they cannot monetize DJ mixes uploaded by third parties where my track appears.
The first response was simple: a DJ played the track at an event and the mix was uploaded by a partner. That explanation raised more questions than answers. Who authorized the distribution? Under what license is my work being used on a commercial streaming platform?
A few weeks ago I discovered that my track was included in a DJ mix on #AppleMusic. No one contacted me. No permission was requested. No license was discussed. As the artist and #copyright holder, the first thing I did was contact #Apple to understand how and why my music appeared there.

We fight for visibility, but also for fairness. If a track is used in a commercial DJ mix, the creator deserves consent and royalties. Underground doesn’t mean lawless. Independent doesn’t mean free content. Respect in music must start with respecting authorship.
And when you ask them on what basis they use your track, the answer is often misleading: “We don’t need permission for this.” That’s simply not true. Turning someone’s work into part of a commercial DJ mix without consent is not a right, it’s a choice.
Getting played by a famous DJ is supposed to be an “honor.” But honor doesn’t pay rent. Streams generate money. Mixes generate money. And yet the original artist is expected to be grateful instead of being paid. That’s not culture — that’s exploitation.
#techno scene loves to talk about unity, respect, and underground ethics. But when it comes to artists’ rights, even big names often act like copyright doesn’t exist. If your track fits their mix, they use it first. Permission later. Maybe never.
