Not really here to make original posts, but like reading and learning from others. Wildlife, gardening, the Great War of particular interest and maybe have a chuckle now and again.

BBC Radio 3 - The Essay, Music Rediscovered, The English music historian Sophie Coulombeau looks at the ambitions of teacher scholar and composer Charles Burney.

I’m chuffed to be back on the @bbcradio3bot.bsky.social airwaves tomorrow evening, celebrating the 300th anniversary of Dr Charles Burney (the music one, not the book thief one) AND the 250th anniversary of his General History of Music - a milestone in musicology.

I follow some pretty esoteric alleyways in studying the #GreatWar. Atm, I’m reading β€œThe Heart and Soul of an Army” (1921) by Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston. This excerpt on page 271 speaks to the fallacy that supporting arms (including airpower) win wars. It’s worth repeating today. #booksky #milsky

Counting the dead at Fukushima To say that β€œNo one died from radiation at Fukushima” or β€œThere have been no deaths or cases of radiation sickness from the nuclear accident” misses the point, considering what the Japanese call…

Marking the 15th anniversary of the disaster @maximepolleri.bsky.social argues that to say that β€œNo one died from radiation at Fukushima” fails to grapple with questions about low-dose radiation, excludes catastrophe-related deaths, and discounts the way that lives have been disrupted.

What did Churchill mean by "the special relationship"?

Why did he vest such hopes in the United Nations?

Why was there such anger in the US press?

I joined @ppfideas.bsky.social to explore Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, 80 years after it was delivered. Available wherever you get your podcasts

Morning Meditation β€” Moved by their selfish desires, people seek afterΒ fame. 'Moved by their selfish desires, people seek after fame and glory. But when they have acquired it, they are already stricken in years. If you hanker after worldly fame and practise not the Way, your labours are wrongfully applied and your energy is wasted.' The coast/west is definitely the place to be today with wall-to-wall sunshine as convection inland brings cloudier skies.

To finish off this series, join us for a nice gentle episode as we drift down a river in canoes with the Bedfordshire Bat Group. As dusk falls, volunteers begin to survey the bats that call the river home.

Our little wildlife pond is teaming with tiny tadpoles! A few have dispersed and are feeding around the edges, but mostly they're all clumped together so the surface of the pond looks alive.

Just two years ago a single frog laid a small clump of spawn… and now, a few years on, there's LOADS of it
