The ROI of βjust paying a bit more in taxesβ seems preferable for billionaires than increasingly trying to influence American political and policy outcomes.

The Modified @claudia-sahm.bsky.social rule with Black unemployment shows that marginalized communities often signal a downturn before the aggregates catch up.
To add to the point @gbenga-ajilore.bsky.social of @centeronbudget.bsky.social is making.
My WP shows that you can test the "first fired" result, by putting Black unemployment into a @claudia-sahm.bsky.social like rule, and it shows exactly that.

Thereβs a real poli-econ connection between rising inequality and authoritarianism, that too many supply-side economists ignored for decades.
Have been researching inflation in times of overlapping emergencies the past years. This feels like 2022 on steroids.
Am visiting the LSE this week to share some work in progress on anti-fascist economics, trying to make sense of this moment as it is unfolding.

I had students predict the 2026 election in my elementary stats class. I try to give them examples of things theyβll see in the real world.

This is really clear data visualization.
These bubble charts are great at showing distribution, especially when you use color to show categories.
βLine go up β¬οΈβ is the quintessential first-order conclusion of any good data viz.
Being able to communicate directionality and scale is paramount.
Make no mistake: the AI boom, and data center construction it requires, is nothing more than a massive giveaway to Big Tech oligarchs at the expense of our environment and our statesβ public resources.
Our leaders should put communities before Big Tech's bottom lines.
Over 10 years ago, long before George Floyd, I was doing a #BlackLivesMatter photo campaign. Facebook HQ invited me to photograph the staff.
Back then, the view was controversial. At the grassroots level, no one had any idea there was any formal 501c3.
A lot has changed since then.

from W. E. B. Du Bois:
With the #JobsDay data there are criticisms about the increase in unemployment, but labor-oriented recession indicators, like the @claudia-sahm.bsky.social rule, Modified U6 #SahmRule, the #MichezRule, still do not point to a downturn.
A bad or weakening economy is not the same thing as recession.
βAffordabilityβ is the word of the moment.
Even as economic indicators show growth and cooling inflation, many Americans still struggle to afford the basics, leaving, as ESPβs @mtkonczal.bsky.social puts it, βa little less left over to enjoy things.β

Research is hard and can be very arduous. So much good work gets wasted because researchers effectively spike the ball at the one yard line, because they think they're above making things look nice.
Especially in the economic policy space, research needs to be legible to have any public impact.
These two visualizations are the same data, just visualized differently. This comes from a report that I helped a professor with, aimed at giving the NY state legislature an update on the economic outlook.
And is case-in-point why research communication is so important.
Not all heroes wear capes
This project represents decades of work and advocacy on the part of the leadership and steering committee, and my little design contribution comes much later.
So this is my plea to all researchers: forget your h-index, do cool and important work, I promise someone will eventually join in to help.
Did a quick redesign of the Friends of BLS site!
Fantastic group. @aaronsojourner.org is so helpful, Bill Beach is hilarious, and Paul is so easy to work with.
This is a project I believe in, a cause I support, and with my design background it was super easy for me to help.

Data shows: Trump is most mentioned in #EpsteinFiles, the #SOTU leaned hard on "American greatness," the Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than ever, betting markets show rising #Iran war risk, insulin costs are declining, Norway led the Winter #Olympics medal count, but Italy spent the most.
Trump says he's "won affordability." @joshbivens-econ.bsky.social's latest for @msnownews.bsky.social explains how the data shows a different story...and a policy path toward real affordability wins for U.S. families.
