Quote from James Baker, ORG Programme Manager: "The British public is being forced to hand over sensitive personal data to unregulated age assurance providers if they want to have full access to platforms such as Reddit and Bluesky or Grindr."
The Online Safety Act requires age assurance to restrict not only access to porn but any content that could be ‘harmful’ for under 18s – a term that can be intrepreted broadly.
Without it, users are either blocked from accessing the platform, or features like DMs and certain content are restricted.
I really don't want to upload my stupid face to this age assurance thing but I literally can't view half of the posts on my fucking feed because of it.
Had to do a new Age Assurance thing this morning for BlueSky to unlock certain features, because of the UK's draconian online safety law.
Occurred to me that, since all it did was scan my face, any passing adult would have worked just as well if they had been willing to cooperate. Hardly foolproof.
