As she remarked, "Paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it—I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."
Using close cropping techniques she learned from modernist photography, here O'Keeffe magnifies the flower, extending it beyond the frame of the painting. By using a small, ordinary flower to suggest the immensity of nature, O’Keeffe sought to undermine her viewers’ typical ways of looking.
