She had waited more than six months, but hadn’t received a notice from U.S.C.I.S. acknowledging receipt of her application. “There are thousands of applications that are sitting unopened in regional offices because so many staff have left the agency,” Krieger told me. “Literally boxes in mailrooms.” Krieger managed to find the woman’s application and sent an agency receipt to ICE. She was deported anyway.

The Trump administration's handling of the legal immigration system is so malignant and incompetent that ICE ended up deporting a human trafficking victim seemingly because so many people have quit that her application for relief was sitting in a mailroom in a box unopened.
