like i tried making a nifty "menu stack" api for my UI system and it was just this overcomplicated mess. instead I just made each menu by hand with a few helper functions and got it done within a couple days

something ive noticed re: programming is that it's almost always a waste of time to try and come up with clever "abstractions" for things instead of just rawdogging them caveman-style and pulling out repeated bits into functions

the thing i ultimately think about this is - this can't continue forever. interest in video games isn't suddenly vanishing into the ether. there remains opportunity to meet that interest.

the problem is that the interim of rebuilding is gonna be really dire and nobody knows how long that will be.
