Glad to share that our special issue of German History, co-edited with @nkleinoeder.bsky.social, is now available in First View. It focuses on colonial railway infrastructure in the German Empire. If you would like access, just let us know.

This brings to mind a novel I just finished - The Correspondent. The main character is a letter writer and some of the book focuses on how she writes and receives lovely letters from writers she admires. Such a beautiful and profound book.

Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

"If great powers abandon even the pretense of rules & values for the unhindered pursuit of their power & interest, the gains from transactionalism will become harder to replicate" -- Carney's speech at Davos is an extended criticism of the damage Trump is doing (though he's not mentioning his name)

The Sunday Editorial: Venezuelaโ€™s fate is a warning for Canada The U.S. military action to seize Nicolรกs Maduro marks the formal debut of an imperial America

The Globe and Mail (Canadaโ€™s sober, establishment, slightly centre-right paper): Trump plans to treat Canada as Athens treated Melosโ€”โ€œthe strong do what they please; the weak suffer what they mustโ€โ€”and Canada must regard itself as in a โ€œnational emergency.โ€

Oligarchs are addicted to greed.

In 1982, there were just 13 US billionaires worth $14 billion.

Today, while 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, there are 903 US billionaires worth $6.8 trillion.

Enough is enough. We need an economy that works for all, not just the top 1%.
