The 1937 and 1970 hemp bans were the biggest mistakes made in this arena. Hemp yields 2 crops per year, makes superior paper and building products, as well as a bio-plastic. But as always, big (lumber) business profits won out. Think of all the trees that could have been saved and the CO2 reduction.

Sea ice's cooling power is waning faster than its area of extent As sea ice disappears and grows less reflective, the Arctic has lost around a quarter of its cooling power since 1980, and the world has lost up to 15%, according to new research.

River Boyne to close for salmon fishing as stocks fall to crisis levels The River Boyne is to be closed for salmon fishing this year to preserve stocks.

This is a slow death for the River Boyne. There has never been any particular effort to alleviate the pressure on this river despite years (decades?) of warnings and reports

*Great* talk by @whittledaway.bsky.social on the terrible state of nature in Ireland.

As PΓ‘draic argues so well, the solutions exist, and would massively benefit not just nature, but people, the economy, and the climate.

'One of the most successful wildlife comeback stories': The Alps lost its vultures - then it got them back Decades after its release into the wild, a super-ageing, bone-crunching vulture called Balthazar reveals a major conservation success.

"A very beautiful story."

How the Alps lost its bone-breaker vultures - then got them back.

Few things are as uplifting as the return of wild nature.

Since 1990, I’ve been looking at Ireland’s water quality horrors and the EU’s casual acceptance of it. Until Ireland accepts that its ag practices are leading to its ecological death and that Sitka spruce farms are a failed experiment, nothing will change. I rarely see birds or mammals in Donegal.

Pushing ahead, without concern for the consequences, which may be global. Inflicting long-term damage to a complex, not-well understood system.
I just have a bad sense about how impactful it will ultimately be as this industry develops. And it no doubt will; out of sight, largely out of mind.
