Yeah, even going back to the OG Star Wars trilogy and the OG Indiana Jones films, the extent to which they worked because the tech restrictions forced narrative focus, and that he handed a lot of the work over to other people, focusing himself in the process, can't be understated.

It's a strong reminder it was not particularly that the bones of the prequels that had issues, merely the presentation/execution struggled to live up to expectations. Shoot, that was already obvious from Tartakovsky's Clone Wars showing the plot & setting were fine with better direction.

NGL, I had a better overall productivity experience with a Nexus 7 and a wired apple keyboard at the end of my run of "extremely mobile" computing, but I was shocked how quickly my muscle memory came back working on that machine last night.

If I ever wanted to actually hack this into being a modern daily, it'd probably fit the guts of a m1 macbook air or a chromebook & certainly would fit those of a samsung galaxy 20+ /google nexus 8+, plus battery. The hard part would be keyboard/mouse support, as even the monitor could be upgraded.

It is wild how "huge" the motherboard is on this by modern standards. like, yeah, some of that is having upgradable wifi and memory, but it also just has much less integration than modern laptop packaging, especially in this price point where system on a chip reigns supreme now.

honestly, it would probably be a better candidate than any of the later eee's, as it's a downclocked celeron in it instead of an atom. the wifi card would be the sketchy part.

Interesting. Still, get that ferry running again. I mean, I'll take BC Ferries instead until then, but it'd be nice to have more options when I'm trying to visit the Seattle area from Victoria with my vehicle.

If anyone has current Linux Distro suggestions for old machines with 32bit intel CPUs stuck with 4gb of storage & 2gb of ram, holler at me in the replies here. I was thinking Crunchbang, but it might be too heavy and no longer have 32bit support.

That's cool as hell. It was always kind of fun seeing how far these things could be pushed between upgrades, overclocks, OS tweaks & app compilation choices. Great tinkerer machines, especially in a pre-raspberry pi era. Now, even a pi4 would be lapping this all day.

Eee701 fully reassembled and unhappily running Bunsen Linux.

I think this still needs a lighter distro, but it's still running 20ish years later. I'm shocked how naturally typing on the micro keyboard came back to me for logging in and poking around online real quick too.

Yep, I bumped my eee701 to 2 gigs as soon as I could afford it & I handtuned windows & every app. Even then, moved on to an eee 1000ha, then an eee transformer, then finished up my undergrad with a nexus 7 tablet + a keyboard case after I fell down a set of stairs & the transformer saved my spine.

Oh yeah that didn't work ever for most folks. In that way, the whole "neo is new eee" idea doesn't hold water because it's so much capable.

I was always pretty good at keeping my expectations reasonable for mine, but I was also at the peak of my computer janitoring patience for micro-optimizing every process, plus overclocking and leaning on extended batteries from deal extreme, with a homebuilt desktop for real work.

The last time this laptop was in use was as a spare for a buddy who was crashing with me. In hindsight, I should've been more active in setting my friends up with the plug like that. I shouldn't still own this.

I saw some posting about how MacBook Neo is the new eeePC, and that reminded me mine was cooked, and since my hobby time is kind of open until my hearing situation is more sorted, screw it, it's play with old laptops or start digging into wiring up my basement, and that can wait for summer.

And I've got one that's even older than wade/dankpod's.

Well, I've got two actually, but last I checked the 1000HA I've got is fine. Probably should look into a flash to IDE adapter and swapping its cmos battery too.

CR2032 with tack welded wires

Tack welds on the battery, of course. Well I'll just have to get what I can from those terminals and let electrical tape do the rest.
