As a contrast I watched an original series episode with Liza Minelli and it's much funnier. The jokes are more rapid fire, more risque/darker (they make a sex/sax joke and lift up the corpse of a pig puppet into the air), and just generally more engaging.
Finally got around to watching the Muppet show special with Sabrina Carpenter and honestly... I didn't think it was that good 😅
Like there's funny bits and all but it was way too self-referential for me. The jokes were all a bit too obvious and not nearly sardonic enough. It felt too Disneyfied.

As others have said in the thread probably bad design that it is now too expensive to fix. The smart way to do it is to strip out periods/other non-meaningful characters before you store it in your db, but Netflix et al. likely didn't do that to start, and cleaning the db now would be a nightmare.
