Fringed with ancient and modern coins, this ceremonial Palestinian woman's marriage cap was part of a bride's dowry, with the number of coins & their value being an indication of wealth & status. Made by female artisans, the shape, embroidery and coins varied from region to region. Donated in 1952.

La Saliera: gold & enamel salt cellar 1543, masterpiece made for François I, by Benvenuto Cellini, Italian Mannerist goldsmith & sculptor, died in Florence #OTD 1571. La Saliera featured in Balzac’s novel La Peau de Chagrin; Cellini inspired Dumas’s novel L’Orfèvre du Roi.
