The San Francisco gartersnake - one of the USA's most beautiful and endangered snakes. Many people don't believe a bright blue and red snake can be discreet - but when seen in its habitat you can see how these snakes can evade notice.

I keep thinking about the folks trying to break into the environmental/ecological field right now. So many who've had seasonal or permanent jobs ripped out from beneath them, hopeful grad students to-be seeing their opportunities go up in smoke. I don't want them to give up. (1/2)

Reminder that a study on lizard saliva eventually led to the development of Ozempic so be real wary of the criticism of studies and funding that sounds non-sensical when presented with no context.

An Arizona Black Rattlesnake found one morning in a high elevation stand of ponderosa pine. I was stunned by its beauty and overall mild temperament, extremely similar to that of timber rattlesnakes here in the East.
