In my utopian vision of the future, instead of offloading all the pointless, annoying work tasks (like reports that none one will read and needlessly opaque forms) to robots, we restructure work and society so that the pointless tasks don't happen at all.

Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump โ€” 3 in House & 20 in Senate). Thatโ€™s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.

Europe's MSCA postdoctoral fellowships are now attracting many researchers who would have gone to the US. So the payline has dropped below 10% (~1,600 fellowships to 17k applicants). Super tough situation. One more reason to double the next Horizon budget, as proposed by the EU Commission.

Too poor to science: How wealth determines who succeeds in STEM From student to researcher, a career in science can come with a high price tag. This Perspective explores how persistent financial barriers limit who can succeed in science, revealing how wealth shape...

"The myth of meritocracy in science collapses under the financial sacrifices expected at every career stage. From unpaid internships and self-funded conferences to underpaid positions, these hidden costs disproportionately exclude those without generational wealth, compounded by race and gender."

Doesnโ€™t seem the two functions you mentioned (select info / re-emit experiences) account for this ability to combine concepts compositionally to make up new stuff

NEW ๐Ÿงต Is human intelligence starting to decline?

Recent results from major international tests show that the average personโ€™s capacity to process information, use reasoning and solve novel problems has been falling since around the mid 2010s

What should we make of this?

None of us can be sure what will โ€œwork.โ€ You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never โ€œsureโ€ of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.
