Some reasons are obvious. Covid-cancelled season played a part for a while. Reduction in levels of minors undoubtedly played a part.
But smart people in the game pointed to some less obvious reasons as well. That's what I wrote about today here:

I hear ya on the Giants note. I’m also a little suspect of the high K% but I’d guess the Marlins have some model where they think some coaching can help make a jump.
Admittedly haven’t looked much into the other two so could think there is a sleeper there too.
TBD on Cabreras elbow but that just seems to be their type of hitter they’re comfortable getting. Could be a model they have or just willing to take the chance.

Willing to be in SEA, likes to hit there and by all accounts a good culture fit for what they’re looking for.

Crazy that the Mariner pitchers were a total buzz saw through TOR’s lineup after the first.
Threw 100 pitches *total* in 9 innings with 27 of those in the first!
Miller looked 100x better innings 2-6.
Ideal outcome for SEA
Feels weird to say but best options for the Mariners might be to be up a lot, or down a lot in the first 3/4 innings.
Either way they could get by with Miller then some combo of Hancock, Ferguson, Vargas, Jackson.
