Like, one my friends lived two or three blocks from where they split the state into four pie slices, so the urban (dem) vote was outweighed by the rural (rep) vote. His neighbors literally all voted on different congressional ballots. Utah has never really respected the vote of its constituents.
I voted for the independent commission, and I remember it passing, and I remember the legislature nerfing it. I no longer live there, but there was no reason why I, in downtown Salt Lake City, a city of 200k and a metro of 2-3 mil, was voting for the same rep as my aunt in ST GEORGE, 300 MILES AWAY.
what's interesting about this is that it serves the same purpose as trump's rallies — energizing potential supporters and interested people, creating a positive vibe that builds an affective relationship — but is so much more democratic in that it is participatory
