This is bad messaging, because each person needs a separate fare payment method to count toward their own fare cap.

MetroCard technology was obsolete, and the backend ran on OS/2. The problem is OMNY as a replacement is missing key features of MetroCard, from balance and transfer status after tapping, to unlimited time based passed (policy decision, not technology limited).
My final 30-day MetroCard ran out of time last week, and I've already not taken discretionary trips because of the weekly fare cap, and general disdain of OMNY.
You can have the balance transferred to an OMNY card at a customer service center.
OMNY is such garbage, and they need to bring back a fixed duration unlimited pass option.

Started my final 30-day unlimited ride MetroCard cycle today. Beginning March 4, I have to start using OMNY.
Unlimited bus and subway access is fare capped to approx. two hours of minimum wage pay per week. The money is better spent on more service, and expansion.
The cost of living crisis in this city has always been housing, not transit.
Stop using the statistic that 95% of sheltered bus stops have been cleared. Unsheltered bus stops are the vast majority of bus stops.
None of my reports to 311 for not clearing snow have had any updates, days later, even though DSNY is supposed to respond within 24 hours.
