The tight restrictions on pirated media haven't resulted in the average person needing to look very hard to find pirated media. I don't expect tight restrictions on LLMs to have a different outcome.

Given that self-hosted models already exist in droves, I don't think any such regulation would be enforceable. It'll go down the same way the ban on encryption exports went down in the 90's, or the same way the fight against digital piracy is going today.

This is largely how I feel about blockchains (the other technology oft-maligned on Bluesky). There are use cases where a distributed immutable ledger is a gamechanger… and instead it gets wasted on gambling.
