Regular. Think about it like hot sauce. Regular hot sauce is hot. The medium is generally half as hot.

All dryers should now be labeled by hot sauces. Air fluff is just a picture of Heinz ketchup

basically http needs to know that the page hasn't been tampered with, so you need some kind of signing. but you also need to make sure the signature can't be tampered with, so you have to protect the whole message, and at that point you're just reinventing SSL. security sucks + is bad

cable and dsl providers were notorious in the us for injecting "warning: you've used x% of your data" alerts into random pages you were viewing (or other nuisance popups). imagine going to cnn and getting a popup mentioning you, by name, and your account #. that has nothing to do with cnn

imagine a static js library hosted on not-https; your mcdonalds free wifi replaces it with another version that exfiltrates credentials. (browsers won't load http over https now, but you get the idea for why)

someone on the same connection (e.g. using the same wifi) or otherwise hooked in to any part of the connection between you and the endpoint has the complete ability to see (and modify) what comes through it
now they know every page you're looking at, every image that loads, everything you submit

the other side effect of this i noticed is that mfgr's would just turn off the "verify certificate" option and accept whatever. the security industry was really funny sometimes.

you can get around that by supporting it directly (as we did at the time) in your own services, but you have to manage all of that yourself, depending. it starts to get real annoying, real fast.

it doesn't have to, but there are situations (again, embedded) where there isn't a lot you can do sometimes. we ran into this at work many years back when 1.0 got dropped

and since we frequently deal in pixel art, good compression can insert very subtle artifacts, and now you're copying-and-pasting images into irfanview to check how many colors they have. 4? ok, fine. 162? hmm

like a lot of things, a lot of this shit doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but it happens to matter to me. it's the main reason we don't have it on tcrf right now. seeing a jpeg in a main article is a huge red flag: that's muddied w/ webp.

i hate mushrooms more than i hate webp, they're squishy and taste like feet. that does not mean i am going to campaign to ban them from your grocery store, but i am going to complain when they start getting added to the chili i've been getting for the last year. same as it is here

that's the thing that gets me, though, like it literally does not matter in the least what i think about it. i cannot enter your computer and delete webp support. i cannot rewrite the website you are using to reject it. nothing i say actually matters.
